Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love the arts from the aunt Denise. The aunt worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious from her mother. While DuVernay grew up within Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma, and later directed an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became attracted to the field of production for television journalism. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury as well as go through their garbage. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
